A filling is typically placed in a tooth that has one or more cavities, or areas of decay. Fillings are tooth-colored, so no one will even know they’ve been placed. Most fillings can last for quite some time before any type of replacement is needed. They are beneficial for both pediatric as well as adult patients who have areas of tooth decay.
Why are Dental Fillings needed?
A dental filling is normally needed if you have a cavity. If you ignore the cavity, the decay gets to the point of infiltrating the inner pulp of the tooth. Before it gets to this point, the decay is removed and a filling put in place. Fillings are one of the most commonly placed dental restorations around the world.
Who is a good candidate for Dental Fillings?
Most patients who need a filling can safely have the procedure done in our office. We will examine the tooth to determine if it might have a cavity. We may sometimes need to take an x-ray to further identify areas that are decayed. If you need a filling, it is important to have the procedure done as soon as possible.
What happens during the Dental Filling process?
You will be given an anesthetic to numb the area. The decay is removed from the tooth completely. Once this is done, the hole is prepped for a new filling. The composite resin, or tooth-colored filling, is put into place. It is smoothed out and cured with a bright light. This ensures that the filling doesn’t move or fall out of place. You will then be able to leave the office without the worry that your teeth are damaged, decayed or compromised in any way because of the restoration that has been placed.
